System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsV70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls the cooling fan with a PWM signal through the fan control unit. The fault was detected in the engine control module and concerns the signal wire between the two control units, which is shorted to voltage.
Possible causes
- The signal wire between the engine control module (ECM) and the fan control unit is shorted to voltage
- Damaged fan control unit
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. Their location is in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
- 2Check the connectors between the engine control module and the fan control unit for looseness, contact resistance and corrosion.
- 3With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with voltage (positive).
- 4Check that the signal wire is not chafed or pinched.
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the cooling fan and check that it starts and stops when you send the command.
- 6If the code returns, have a workshop check the fan control unit and the engine control module.
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine runs hot or overheats
What the fault can affect1
- The cooling fan is active
