What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) controls the cooling fan through a PWM signal that goes via the fan control unit. The code is recorded in the engine control module and concerns the signal wire between the two control units, which may be broken. It can also be set by a fault in the engine control module's output stage or internally in the fan control unit.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance or corrosion in the connectors between the engine control module (ECM) and the fan control unit
    • Open circuit in the signal wire between the engine control module and the fan control unit

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact. Their location is in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
    2. 2Check the connectors between the engine control module and the fan control unit for looseness, contact resistance and corrosion.
    3. 3With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the signal wire between them has no break.
    4. 4Check that the wire is not chafed or pinched, especially where it may be exposed to movement.
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault status with the ignition on and check whether the code returns after it has been cleared.
    6. 6If the break is not found, have a workshop check the wire between the control units.

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The engine runs hot or overheats

    What the fault can affect1

    • The cooling fan is active
