ECM-P147498 - Fan Control Primary Circuit. Component Failures. Component or system over temperature
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsV70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls the cooling fan through a PWM signal that goes via the fan control unit. The code concerns overtemperature in the component or system. The fault may have been detected by the fan control unit or by the engine control module itself, and it is checked with the ignition on.
Possible causes
- Excessively high temperature in the engine bay
What you can do
- 1Check that the radiator grille and the area around the cooling fan are not blocked by leaves, debris or dirt.
- 2Check that the cooling fan starts when the engine gets warm, and that it keeps running for a while after the engine is switched off.
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the coolant temperature in live data when the engine is warm, and check whether the cooling fan runs as the temperature rises.
- 4If the fault returns while the cooling works, have a workshop check the cooling fan control unit and the engine control module.
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine runs hot or overheats
What the fault can affect1
- The cooling fan is active
