What does this fault code mean?

Although the code is named as a vehicle speed sensor, it applies to the speed value sent by the brake control module (BCM). The engine control module (ECM) compares that value with engine speed when the fuel supply is cut off, for example during engine braking. The code is first set in the brake control module and can only be cleared once the fault there has been corrected.

    Possible causes

    • Wrong speed value sent by the brake control module (BCM)

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the wheel sensors are clean, as dirt on them can give too low a speed signal.
    2. 2Check whether the brake control module (BCM) has its own fault codes for the speed signal, and correct those first, since this code follows them.
    3. 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the speed value sent by the brake control module in live data during a test drive, and compare it with the speedometer.
    4. 4Clear the code only once the fault in the brake control module has been corrected, and check that it does not return.
    5. 5Do not work on the braking system yourself. If the fault remains, have a workshop check it.

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • The eco lamp is lit
    • The speedometer shows an incorrect value

    What the fault can affect2

    • With a manual gearbox, the speed signal is set to a default value
    • With an automatic gearbox, a secondary speed signal from the transmission control module (TCM) is used

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
