What does this fault code mean?
The cooling fan control unit continuously sends its status to the engine control module (ECM), which uses it to control the fan speed and when the fan switches on and off. The code is set when the fan control unit reports that it has an internal fault.
Possible causes
- Damaged cooling fan control unit
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the cooling fan are intact. Their location is in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
- 2Check that the cooling fan starts when the engine gets warm, so you can see whether the fan works at all.
- 3Check the connectors at the fan control unit for looseness, contact resistance and corrosion.
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the status of the fan control unit in live data and check whether it reports a fault.
- 5After any repair, read the code again after a test drive and check that it does not return.
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the fan control unit.
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine runs hot or overheats
