What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the signal from the brake light switch with the brake pedal position. The pedal position is sent from the brake control module (BCM) over the CAN network. The code is set when the signals do not agree, for example when the brake light switch shows the pedal is not pressed while the pedal position shows that it is.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or corrosion in the connections to the brake light switch and the brake pedal position sensor
- Contact resistance, corrosion or looseness in the connector
- Open circuit or short to ground or voltage in the wires to the brake light and brake pedal switch
- Damaged brake light switch, brake position sensor or brake pedal sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. Their location is in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
- 2Check that the brake lights come on when the brake pedal is pressed and go off when it is released.
- 3Check the connectors at the brake light switch and the brake position sensor for looseness, contact resistance and corrosion.
- 4With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the wires to the brake light switch have no break and no contact with ground or voltage.
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, compare the brake pedal position in live data with the brake light switch, with the ignition on.
- 6Do not work on the braking system yourself. If the fault remains, have a workshop check the brake pedal sensor and the brake light switch.
Symptoms you may notice2
- The cruise control does not work at all
- The cruise control cannot be engaged
What the fault can affect1
- The cruise control is switched off for as long as the fault is active
