What does this fault code mean?
The brake information from the brake control module (BCM) includes a running counter that should change all the time. The engine control module (ECM) sets the code when the counter is incorrect or does not update. The fault is recorded first in the brake control module, so the code is a follow-on code.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the communication line, or the communication line is shorted to ground or voltage
- Contact resistance, corrosion, an open circuit or a short in the connections
- The root fault is in the brake control module (BCM)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. Their location is in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
- 2Check the connections at the engine control module and the brake control module for looseness, contact resistance and corrosion.
- 3With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the communication wires have no break and no contact with ground or voltage.
- 4Correct the fault in the brake control module first and clear the code there, since this code follows it.
- 5Do not work on the braking system yourself. If the fault remains, have a workshop check the brake control module and the communication between the control modules.
Symptoms you may notice2
- The cruise control does not work at all
- The cruise control cannot be engaged
What the fault can affect1
- The cruise control is switched off for as long as the fault is active
