What does this fault code mean?

The code is set when the engine control module (ECM), during an attempt to adapt the throttle body, detects that the throttle movement is blocked or that the return spring does not work correctly. The fault therefore lies in the throttle body or its connections. Although the code is named as a loss of return spring, the condition covers both the movement and the spring function.

    Possible causes

    • The throttle sticks or is blocked, for example by oil film or dust
    • Contact resistance or corrosion at the throttle body connector to the ECM
    • Open circuit or short to ground or voltage in the wires to the throttle motor
    • The wires to the throttle motor are shorted to each other
    • Damaged throttle body

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that nothing is blocking the throttle and that it does not stick. Have a workshop clean the throttle body if needed.
    2. 2With the ignition off, check the connectors at the throttle body and the engine control module for looseness, contact resistance and corrosion.
    3. 3With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the throttle motor wires have no break, no contact with ground or voltage, and are not shorted to each other.
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault codes for the throttle and its control first, since they may be the cause.
    5. 5If the code returns, it points to a damaged throttle body, which a workshop can replace.

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • The engine lacks power or performs poorly
    • The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
    • A text message is shown in the display

    What the fault can affect1

    • Depending on the nature of the fault, the power to the throttle motor may be switched off, so the throttle goes to its spring-return position

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
