What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has lost contact with the central electronic module (CEM) over the CAN bus. The immobilizer relies on the two control modules checking each other's codes, so this fault code means the engine cannot be started. The code is general and does not state what type of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Open circuit on one of the CAN cables
- Short circuit between the CAN cables
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
- The engine control module or central electronic module lacks software for this particular vehicle
- The engine control module or central electronic module has been moved from another vehicle
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM) and note them
- 2Inspect the CAN cables between the engine control module and the CEM for open circuits, chafing and loose connectors
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the CAN cables are not short-circuited to each other or to earth
- 4Reconnect any disconnected connectors and components, switch the ignition on and start the engine to see whether the fault code returns
- 5If the fault remains: have a workshop check that the software in the engine control module and the CEM belongs to this particular vehicle
