Engine Control Module (ECM)

Applies to the following models:

Show models by year and engine (1)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares two signals for the gear position: one that comes by a direct wire from the transmission control module (TCM) and one that comes over the CAN bus. The fault code is set when the signals do not agree, or when the TCM reports a fault in the gear selector.
Possible causes
- Fault in the transmission control module (TCM). Fault-tracing should be done there
- Contact resistance in the connector
- The wire between the gear selector and the engine control module is short-circuited to voltage
- Open circuit on the wire between the gear selector and the engine control module
- The wire between the gear selector and the engine control module is short-circuited to earth
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes. If a fault code for the gear selector is stored in the transmission control module (TCM), troubleshoot that one first
- 2Check that the connectors to the gear selector and to the transmission control module are firmly seated and free from oxide
- 3Check the signal wire between the gear selector and the engine control module for breaks and chafing
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with earth or battery positive
- 5If the fault code returns: have a workshop troubleshoot the transmission control module
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start
