What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) monitors the signal from the vehicle speed sensor and informs the engine control module (ECM) over the CAN network when something is wrong. The code is stored in both the BCM and the ECM. The fault can only be detected with the engine running, and the code is set once the test conditions are met.
Possible causes
- Fault in the brake control module (BCM), where the code is stored first
- Fault in the signal from the vehicle speed sensor to the brake control module
What you can do
- 1Read off the codes in the brake control module (BCM) first and remedy them, as the code in the engine control module follows from that fault
- 2Clear the code in the engine control module only once the code in the brake control module has been cleared
- 3Check that the connectors to the brake control module are secure and free from corrosion
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the speed value in the brake control module's live data with the speedometer during a test drive and check that they follow each other
- 5If the code returns after the fault is remedied, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment investigate further
Symptoms you may notice3
- Malfunction indicator light (MIL) on
- Cruise control does not work and cannot be engaged
- Check engine warning lamp lights or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect3
- Cruise control is switched off
- On cars with automatic transmission, the transmission control module (TCM) supplies the speed value instead
- On cars with manual transmission, the brake control module's speed value is replaced by a default value
