What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the speed value from the brake control module (BCM) with the one from the transmission control module (TCM). The code is set if the signals differ when the car is driven at higher speed, or at a steady speed for a longer period. It is a comparison between two signals, so the fault can lie in either control module.
Possible causes
- Faulty speed value from the brake control module (BCM)
- Fault in the transmission control module (TCM), which also sends a speed signal
What you can do
- 1Read off the codes in the brake control module (BCM) and in the transmission control module (TCM) first, since the fault lies in one of them
- 2Remedy the faults in those two control modules and clear their trouble codes before clearing the code in the engine control module
- 3Check that the connectors to the brake control module and the transmission control module are secure and free from corrosion
- 4Drive at a steady speed for a while on a test drive and check that the speedometer shows the correct speed
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the speed values from the BCM and TCM in live data during the test drive and check that they agree
Symptoms you may notice1
- Speedometer shows incorrect values or does not work
What the fault can affect2
- On cars with manual transmission the speed signal is set to a default value
- On cars with automatic transmission a secondary speed signal from the transmission control module (TCM) is used
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
