What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares vehicle speed with engine torque and with the values reported by the brake control module (BCM) plus those from the transmission control module (TCM) over the CAN network. Although the code is named alive or sequence counter, it concerns the speed signal: it is set when the signal is unreasonable, when it does not match the engine torque, or when the transmission control module's value does not arrive within a set time. The code can only be set once the test has started with the engine running.
Possible causes
- Faulty speed value from the brake control module (BCM)
- Damaged transmission control module (TCM)
- An overarching CAN fault that has disturbed communication between the control modules
What you can do
- 1Check whether any of the codes ECM-U012088, ECM-U000188, ECM-U1A1400, ECM-U000108 or ECM-U000100 is also stored in the engine control module, and investigate those first
- 2Read off the trouble codes in the brake control module (BCM) and remedy them, as this code can only be cleared once the root fault is remedied
- 3Check that the connectors in the CAN network are secure and free from corrosion, and twist and wiggle the cable harness where it can be reached to see whether communication drops out
- 4Check that the control modules on the CAN network receive power supply and ground, as an open circuit there can cause this code
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the CAN communication
Symptoms you may notice2
- Speedometer shows incorrect values or does not work
- Check engine warning lamp lights or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- The brake control module's (BCM) speed value is only used if it is correct, otherwise a default value is set
- On cars with automatic transmission, a secondary speed signal from the transmission control module (TCM) is used instead
