What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) verifies that the brake pedal sensor and the stop lamp switch give reliable and matching signals. The code is set by disturbances on the brake light signal, when the brake pedal is activated without a brake light signal arriving, or when the signals do not correspond. It can also be set by a problem in the brake control module (BCM).

    Possible causes

    • Open circuit, or a short to earth or to supply voltage, in the cable to the stop lamp switch
    • Incorrectly installed or damaged stop lamp switch
    • Contact resistance, oxidation or loose connections at the stop lamp switch or brake pedal position sensor
    • Damaged brake pedal position sensor
    • Low battery voltage
    • Fault in the brake control module (BCM) or in the CAN network, such as an open or short circuit in one of the cables

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses for the brake lights and control modules are intact
    2. 2Test that the brake lights come on when the brake pedal is pressed
    3. 3Check that the connectors at the brake pedal and the stop lamp switch are secure and free from oxidation and damage
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data how the brake pedal position and the brake light signal follow each other when the pedal is pressed and released
    5. 5If the brake pedal or brake lights behave abnormally, have the car checked by a workshop before it is driven further

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • Cruise control does not work and cannot be engaged
    • Warning symbol and text message shown in the driver information display

    What the fault can affect1

    • Cruise control is switched off while the fault is active

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
