What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) receives information about the brake pedal position from two position switches. The code is set if the ECM detects that the signal from either of them is incorrect or invalid. The fault can lie in the switches or their wiring, but also in the brake control module (BCM).

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance or oxidation at the stop lamp switch or brake pedal position sensor connections
    • Open circuit, or a short to earth or to supply voltage, in the cable to the stop lamp switch
    • Incorrectly installed stop lamp switch
    • Damaged stop lamp switch
    • Damaged brake pedal position sensor
    • Fault in the brake control module (BCM), where the cause should be looked for

    What you can do

    1. 1Check the fuses for the brake light and the engine control module
    2. 2Check that the connectors at the brake pedal are secure and free from oxidation
    3. 3If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the two position switch signals follow the brake pedal when it is pressed and released
    4. 4If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment read off the brake control module (BCM)
    5. 5As the fault concerns the brake pedal: if the pedal or brake light behaves abnormally, have the car checked by a workshop before it is driven further

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • Cruise control cannot be engaged
    • Warning symbol and text message shown in the driver information display

    What the fault can affect1

    • Cruise control is switched off while the fault is active

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
