What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named internal component failure, it applies when the engine control module (ECM) has received an incorrect or invalid signal from either of the two brake pedal position switches. The cause may therefore lie in a switch, in the wiring to it, or in the brake control module (BCM).
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation at the stop lamp switch or brake pedal position sensor connections
- Open circuit, or a short to earth or to supply voltage, in the cable to the stop lamp switch
- Incorrectly installed stop lamp switch
- Damaged stop lamp switch
- Damaged brake pedal position sensor
- Fault in the brake control module (BCM), where the cause should be looked for
What you can do
- 1Check the fuses for the brake lights
- 2Test that the brake lights come on when the brake pedal is pressed and released
- 3Check that the wiring to the pedal position switches is free from chafing and moisture, and that the connectors are secure
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the two position switch signals in live data with each other while the brake pedal is pressed
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop read off the position switches and the brake control module (BCM), as the fault concerns the brake pedal.
- 6If the pedal behaves abnormally, have the car checked by a workshop before it is driven further
Symptoms you may notice2
- Cruise control cannot be engaged
- Warning symbol and text message shown in the driver information display
What the fault can affect1
- Cruise control is switched off while the fault is active
