What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors how much NOx the NOx-storing catalytic converter can store. The converter stores NOx and then reduces it with the help of oxygen. The code is set when the storage capacity is too low, and
Possible causes
- The lambda sensor ahead of the catalytic converter is defective
- The lambda sensor downstream of the catalytic converter is defective
- The NOx-storing catalytic converter is damaged
- The NOx-storing catalytic converter is missing
What you can do
- 1Check the fuses and the connectors to the oxygen sensors for contact resistance and oxidation
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: read the oxygen sensor signals before and after the catalytic converter in live data while driving and check that they give reasonable values
- 3Check that the catalytic converter is fitted in the exhaust system and that the exhaust has no leaks or damage
- 4If the fault remains, have a workshop check the catalytic converter's storage capacity with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine warning lamp lights or behaves abnormally
