What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls the dampers in the variable intake system (VIS) and compares the actual air flow with the expected air flow, which is based partly on the requested position of the actuators. The code is set when the upper primary throttle unit is detected open, that is, when the dampers have jammed in the open position.
Possible causes
- Damaged control valve
- Sticking damper
- Damaged vacuum motor
- Damaged linkage between the swirl throttle motor and the swirl duct
- Swirl damper motor sticking or damaged
- Damaged primary throttle unit (upper)
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the upper primary actuator and check that the throttle unit moves
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the swirl damper motor and listen for a ticking sound, which should be heard as it moves
- 3Check that the dampers and the swirl damper linkage can move freely and that nothing is blocking them
- 4Listen for leaks at the control valve and the vacuum hoses, and check that no hoses have come loose
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the control valve and the vacuum motor
Symptoms you may notice4
- The car performs worse
- The car lacks power, especially at take-off
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly during acceleration, deceleration or steady speed
- Check engine warning lamp lights or behaves abnormally
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
