What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls the variable intake system dampers through a control valve that drives the vacuum motor, and reads the intake air pressure sensor to judge whether the system works. The code is set when the upper primary throttle unit is detected closed, that is, when the dampers have jammed in the closed position.
Possible causes
- Damaged control valve
- Vacuum hoses disconnected from their connections
- Leaking or blocked vacuum hoses
- Sticking damper
- Damaged vacuum motor
- Damaged primary throttle unit (upper)
What you can do
- 1Make sure every vacuum hose is properly attached to the control valve, the vacuum tank and the vacuum motor
- 2Listen for leaks and check that the hoses are not blocked
- 3Check that the dampers can move freely and that nothing is blocking them
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the upper primary actuator and check that it moves
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the control valve and the vacuum motor
Symptoms you may notice3
- The car performs worse
- The car lacks power, especially at take-off
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly during acceleration, deceleration or steady speed
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
