What does this fault code mean?
The code concerns an erratic signal from the exhaust temperature sensor. The engine control module (ECM) checks that the signal follows a calculated value, and the code is set when the sensor gives an incorrect value.
Possible causes
- Loose connection or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged temperature sensor at the catalytic converter
- The mass air flow meter gives an incorrect reading, for example because of charge air leakage
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool: start the engine and read the sensor value in live data, and see whether it jumps while the engine runs steadily
- 2Twist and wiggle the connector at the sensor and see whether the value changes
- 3Check that the connections are secure and free from oxidation
- 4Look for leaks in the charge air system, since a leak can give a wrong air mass reading
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the sensor with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine warning lamp lights or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- A calculated value is used instead of the sensor signal
