What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named component failure, it applies when the reading from the rear sensor at the catalytic converter departs from a calculated value. The ECM watches that signal continuously, and the code is set when the reading from the sensor is wrong.
Possible causes
- Loose connection, contact resistance or oxidation on the connector
- Damaged temperature sensor at the catalytic converter
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Check that the connectors to the sensor are secure and clean
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the sensor's wiring has no open circuit
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the sensor value in live data with the engine warm and check that it seems reasonable
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop measure the sensor resistance and check the connectors
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
What the fault can affect1
- A calculated value is used instead of the sensor signal
