What does this fault code mean?
The fault is intermittent, meaning it comes and goes. The ECM checks the signal from the rear sensor at the catalytic converter against a calculated value, and the code is set when that signal is noisy.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged exhaust temperature sensor after the catalytic converter
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2If the fault is intermittent: check the wiring to the sensor where it can be reached, and see whether the code returns when it is moved
- 3Check that the connections to the sensor are free from oxidation and contact resistance
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fault status after a test drive to see whether the fault is active at that moment
- 5If the fault remains or returns, have a workshop check the sensor after the catalytic converter
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine warning lamp lights or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- No exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control
- Soot particles are not burnt off
