What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named lean mixture, it concerns differences in the mixture between the front and rear oxygen sensors, in either direction. The engine control module (ECM) compares the sensors' adaptation values, and the fault may lie in the front or the rear heated oxygen sensor circuit.
Possible causes
- Leakage in the exhaust system
- Air leakage in the exhaust system
- Air getting into the exhaust manifold ahead of the catalytic converter
- Damaged front heated oxygen sensor
- Damaged rear heated oxygen sensor
- Contact resistance, oxidation or loose connections
What you can do
- 1Check the exhaust system for leaks, both before and after the catalytic converter, and remedy any leak
- 2Check the connectors to the two oxygen sensors for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3See whether other trouble codes are stored and troubleshoot those first, so that no sensor is replaced unnecessarily
- 4If the fault remains, have a workshop establish which oxygen sensor is damaged before any is replaced
- 5If a workshop finds an internal fault in the engine control module, the module must be replaced
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator light (MIL) on
- Check engine warning lamp lights or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- Heated oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are switched off
