What does this fault code mean?
The code is set when the front and rear oxygen sensors disagree so much that the trim for the rear sensor reaches one of its limit positions. It is named too rich, but the condition applies to both sensors and to both directions.
Possible causes
- Leakage in the exhaust system
- Oxygen sensor indicates an incorrectly rich mixture
- Contact resistance, oxidation or loose connections in the connections
- Damaged front oxygen sensor
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
- Air getting into the exhaust manifold ahead of the catalytic converter
What you can do
- 1Check the exhaust system for air leaks and remedy them
- 2Look for contact resistance and oxidation at the oxygen sensor connections
- 3Draw conclusions from other stored trouble codes before deciding which sensor to replace
- 4If the checks above do not remedy the fault, a sensor may need replacing, which a workshop should decide
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop establish whether the engine control module has an internal fault
