What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has picked up a problem inside itself, or in the circuit to the throttle unit's damper motor, and that circuit is open. The fault is checked while the engine is running. Because the throttle is controlled electronically, an open circuit often causes poor performance and an uneven idle.
Possible causes
- Poor contact or oxidation in the connections between the engine control module and the throttle unit
- A broken wire to the throttle motor, or a short to ground or to supply voltage
- The wires to the throttle motor have shorted together
- Damaged throttle unit
- Damaged engine control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the engine control system are intact
- 2Read and note the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the throttle position in live data while pressing the accelerator; the value should follow the pedal smoothly
- 4Check the connectors at the throttle unit and at the engine control module for loose connections, corrosion and oxidation
- 5Look for chafing and breaks in the throttle unit wiring, and use a multimeter to confirm the wires have no contact with ground or supply voltage
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the throttle unit and the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine lacks power and performs poorly
- Uneven idle
- The Check engine light comes on
What the fault can affect1
- The engine control module cuts the supply to the throttle motor, so the throttle returns to its spring-loaded rest position
