What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named throttle and pedal position sensor, it concerns the circuit to the throttle unit motor. The engine control module has registered an internal fault, or a fault in that circuit, and the fault is a component failure. It may come from connectors, wiring, the throttle unit or the engine control module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections between the control module and the throttle unit
- An open circuit, or a short to ground or supply voltage, in the wiring to the throttle motor
- The wires to the throttle motor have shorted together
- Damaged throttle unit
- Damaged engine control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Read the code while the engine is running and note it down
- 3Check the connectors at the throttle unit and the engine control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Look for breaks and chafing in the wiring to the throttle unit, and use a multimeter to confirm it is not connected to ground or supply voltage
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the throttle position in live data and check that it follows the accelerator pedal
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the throttle unit and the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine lacks power and performs poorly
- Uneven idle
What the fault can affect1
- The engine control module cuts the supply to the throttle motor, so the throttle returns to its spring-loaded position
