What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module keeps comparing the throttle position sensor reading with a calculated target value, and the code is set when the deviation grows too large. The fault therefore means the signal is above the permitted range, and it may also come from a damaged governor for the throttle angle.
Possible causes
- An aged position sensor that responds more slowly than before
- The throttle sticks or is blocked, for example by oil film or dust
- Poor contact or oxidation between the control module and the throttle unit
- An open circuit, or a short to ground or supply voltage, or a short between the wires, in the throttle motor wiring
- Damaged throttle unit
- Faulty software in the engine control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Read the code with the engine running and see whether it is active
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the throttle position in live data at idle and while the accelerator is pressed, and check that the two readings agree
- 4Check the connectors at the throttle unit and the engine control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 5Look for chafing and breaks in the throttle motor wiring, and use a multimeter to confirm it has no contact with ground or supply voltage
- 6Have a workshop decide whether the throttle unit, the position sensor or the software needs attention
Symptoms you may notice4
- Uneven idle
- The engine lacks power and performs poorly
- The engine hesitates or surges, and it is unclear when
- The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- The throttle returns to its spring-loaded position
- Fuel shut-off may occur temporarily
