What does this fault code mean?
When the engine control module tries to adapt the throttle unit, it notices that the throttle is blocked or that its movement is impeded. This is a component fault. The module may then cut the supply to the throttle motor, and the fault can lie in the throttle unit or in the wiring to it.
Possible causes
- The throttle sticks or is blocked, for example by oil film or dust
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections between the engine control module and the throttle unit
- An open circuit, or a short to ground or supply voltage, in the wiring to the throttle motor
- The wires to the throttle motor have shorted to each other
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Read the stored codes in the control module first. Codes for the throttle unit, the position sensor or the control module must be dealt with before this one
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3With the ignition off, check that the throttle is not sticking and that nothing is blocking it. Clean the throttle unit if needed
- 4Check the connectors at the throttle unit and the engine control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 5Look for breaks and shorts in the wiring to the throttle motor, and use a multimeter to confirm it has no contact with ground or supply voltage
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment decide whether the throttle unit needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up
- Poor performance
What the fault can affect1
- Depending on the fault, the control module may cut the supply to the throttle motor, and the throttle then tries to return to its spring-loaded position
