What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the accelerator pedal position from the analogue signal, which runs via the central electronic module (CEM), with the PWM signal that goes directly to the ECM. The message from CEM carries a counter that should keep changing. If the counter is wrong or stays still, or if communication with CEM stops, the code is set.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal cable from the accelerator pedal sensor
- Signal cable short-circuited to ground or to supply voltage
- Damaged accelerator pedal sensor
- Open circuit in the communication cable between CEM and the engine control module
- Communication cable short-circuited to ground or to supply voltage
- Contact resistance or oxidation at the connections
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Read the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM) and deal with any CAN-related codes first
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires between the pedal, CEM and the engine control module are not open and have no contact with ground (the body)
- 4Check the connectors at the accelerator pedal sensor, CEM and the engine control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the accelerator pedal value in live data while the pedal is pressed and released, and check that it follows the movement
- 6Do not replace CEM just because of the CAN fault; only replace it if troubleshooting shows that it is faulty internally
Symptoms you may notice4
- Yellow warning symbol and a message in the display
- The car lacks power
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs jerkily
- The accelerator pedal is ignored when braking
What the fault can affect1
- The control module treats the accelerator pedal as released when the brake pedal is pressed at the same time
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
