What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) has been alerted by the central electronic module (CEM) about the accelerator pedal signal or the CAN communication. The code indicates a bus off fault, meaning the control module temporarily stops taking part in communication on the CAN network. It is a follow-on code: fix the CEM fault first, then erase this code.

    Possible causes

    • Fault in the central electronic module (CEM)
    • Interruption in the CAN communication between CEM and the engine control module

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM) first, as the root fault is there
    2. 2Check the fuses and the connectors between the engine control module, CEM and the pedal for loose or oxidised connections
    3. 3Troubleshoot and fix the CEM faults as needed, and erase the code in the engine control module only once they are gone
    4. 4Road test the car and see whether the code comes back
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the accelerator pedal value in live data while the pedal moves and check that it follows the movement

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • Poor response from the accelerator pedal
    • Cruise control stops working altogether

    What the fault can affect1

    • The accelerator pedal is out of action when the brake pedal is pressed

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
