What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) checks the pedal through two sensors: one analogue signal and one pulse width modulated (PWM) signal that goes directly to the ECM. The code is set when the PWM signal from the pedal sensor has a frequency that is too low, meaning the pulses arrive too rarely for the ECM to read the pedal position. The fault may lie in the signal wire, the supply or the sensor itself.

    Possible causes

    • Open circuit in the signal cable
    • Signal cable short-circuited to ground
    • Signal cable short-circuited to supply voltage
    • Power supply cable short-circuited to ground
    • Power supply cable short-circuited to supply voltage
    • Damaged accelerator pedal position sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
    2. 2Road test the car to see whether hesitation, surging or jerky running occurs, and whether it happens right now
    3. 3With a diagnostic tool, read the pedal movement in live data while pressing and releasing the pedal slowly; the values should follow it
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the power supply to the accelerator pedal sensor has no open circuit and is not short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
    5. 5Check the connectors at the accelerator pedal sensor and the engine control module for contact resistance and oxidation
    6. 6Replace the accelerator pedal sensor only if these checks show nothing else and the fault remains

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • The car hesitates, surges or runs jerkily
    • The symptoms can appear all the time or only now and then

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
