What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) compares the analogue signal from the accelerator pedal sensor with the PWM signal. The code is set when the difference between them is too great. The fault may lie in the connectors, the ground or supply wire, or the sensor itself.

    Possible causes

    • Loose connections, contact resistance or oxidation at the accelerator pedal sensor connections
    • Open circuit in the ground lead
    • Fault in the PWM signal from the accelerator pedal sensor
    • Fault in the analogue signal from the accelerator pedal sensor
    • Open circuit in the signal ground cable
    • Damaged accelerator pedal sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
    2. 2Use a multimeter to check that the ground lead to the pedal sensor has no open circuit
    3. 3Check the connectors at the pedal sensor and the engine control module for loose contacts, contact resistance and oxidation, especially the signal wire
    4. 4With the ignition on, check that the supply to the pedal sensor has no open circuit
    5. 5With a diagnostic tool, read the pedal signals in live data while the pedal is pressed and released, and see that they follow each other
    6. 6Replace the pedal sensor first only if the other checks show nothing and the signals are wrong

    Symptoms you may notice4

    • Poor response from the accelerator pedal
    • The car has poor performance and lacks power, especially when pulling away
    • The engine hesitates, surges or runs jerkily
    • Yellow warning symbol and a message in the display

    What the fault can affect1

    • Engine output may be limited

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
