What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) compares the PWM signal with the analogue signal from the accelerator pedal sensor, and the code is set when the difference between them becomes too great. The analogue signal goes via the central electronic module (CEM) over CAN, so troubleshooting starts there. The code is also set on a fault in throttle potentiometer 2.

    Possible causes

    • Fault in the central electronic module (CEM)
    • Contact resistance and oxidation in the terminals
    • Signal wire between the control module and pedal sensor is damaged
    • Short-circuit in the connections
    • Signal cables short-circuited to each other
    • Damaged throttle unit

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM) first, since the pedal signal passes through CEM
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
    3. 3Check the connectors at the pedal sensor and the throttle unit for contact resistance and oxidation
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wires are not short-circuited to each other or to ground
    5. 5With a diagnostic tool, compare the two pedal signals in live data while the pedal is pressed and released; they should follow each other
    6. 6After a repair, read the diagnostic status and check that the code does not return

    Symptoms you may notice4

    • Accelerator pedal ignored when braking
    • The malfunction indicator (Check engine) lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
    • The car has poor performance and lacks power
    • Yellow warning symbol and a message in the display

    What the fault can affect3

    • The lowest pedal position value from the two inputs is used by the control module
    • The control module treats the pedal as released when the brake pedal is pressed at the same time
    • If both potentiometers 1 and 2 have faults, the throttle motor supply is switched off and the throttle returns to its spring-loaded position

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
