What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks the PWM and analogue signals from the pedal, and the code is set when the difference between them is too great. The code is also set if the signal from throttle potentiometer 1 is faulty. The fault may lie in the connectors, the ground wire, the pedal sensor or the throttle unit.
Possible causes
- Loose connections, contact resistance or oxidation at the pedal sensor connections
- Open circuit in the ground lead
- Fault in the PWM signal from the pedal sensor
- Fault in the analogue signal from the pedal sensor
- Terminals linking the control module and throttle unit show contact resistance or oxidation
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the ground lead to the pedal sensor has no open circuit
- 3Check the connectors at the pedal sensor and the engine control module for loose contacts, contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the supply to the pedal sensor is not interrupted
- 5With a diagnostic tool, read the pedal signals in live data while the pedal is pressed and released, and check that they follow each other
- 6If these checks show no other fault, the pedal sensor or the throttle unit may need replacing
Symptoms you may notice5
- Poor response from the accelerator pedal
- The car has poor performance and lacks power
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs jerkily
- Yellow warning symbol and a message in the display
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- Engine output is limited
- The throttle angle is worked out from the other potentiometer; if both potentiometers have faults, the throttle motor supply is switched off and the throttle returns to its spring-loaded position
