What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the speed readings from the brake control module (BCM) and the transmission control module (TCM), and it judges the TCM reading to be of too poor quality. This is a follow-on code set in the ECM. The fault starts in TCM, and the code can only be erased once it has been fixed.
Possible causes
- Faulty speed signal from transmission control (TCM)
- Contact resistance in the CAN connections
- Open circuit in one or both CAN wires
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the transmission control module (TCM) first, since the root fault is there
- 2Fix the fault in TCM and then erase the code in the engine control module
- 3Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 4Check the connectors at the CAN connections for loose contacts and oxidation
- 5With a diagnostic tool, compare the TCM speed value with the speedometer during a test drive
- 6Road test the car after the repair and check that the idle is smooth and that the code does not return
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
- The idle is uneven
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
