What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the vehicle speed readings from brake control (BCM) and transmission control (TCM), and sets the code when they disagree. The fault may lie in either the BCM or the TCM, so both modules need checking.
Possible causes
- Faulty speed signal from brake control (BCM)
- Fault in the brake control module (BCM)
What you can do
- 1Start by reading the codes in both BCM and TCM, since the fault may lie in either
- 2Fix the faults in BCM and TCM, then erase the code in the engine control module
- 3Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 4With a diagnostic tool, compare the BCM and TCM speed values in live data during a test drive and see whether they differ
- 5Road test the car after the repair and check that the speedometer works and that the code does not return
- 6Do not work on the braking system yourself; have a workshop check the BCM if the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice1
- The speedometer reads incorrectly or does not work
What the fault can affect2
- On cars with a manual gearbox the vehicle speed signal is set to a default value
- On cars with an automatic gearbox a secondary speed signal from the TCM is used
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
