What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) compares the requested throttle position with the actual one. The code is set when the difference has been large enough to affect emissions. The fault may lie in a sticking throttle, the connectors, the throttle unit, or another stored fault code.

    Possible causes

    • Throttle is sticking or blocked by, for example, an oil film, dust or ice
    • Other fault codes are stored in the engine control module
    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals
    • Damaged throttle unit
    • Ageing: the position sensor responds more slowly than before

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
    2. 2With a diagnostic tool, read the throttle position in live data at different accelerator pedal positions and check that the value follows along
    3. 3With the ignition off, check that nothing blocks the throttle and gently press the throttle disc to see whether it sticks
    4. 4Clean the throttle unit when needed, with the ignition off
    5. 5Check the connectors at the engine control module and the throttle unit for contact resistance and oxidation
    6. 6Erase the code after the repair and road test the car to check that it does not come back

    Symptoms you may notice4

    • The idle is uneven
    • The running is jerky
    • The car has poor performance and lacks power
    • The malfunction indicator lamp lights up or behaves abnormally

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
