What does this fault code mean?

The ECM keeps comparing the throttle position sensor reading against a modelled target value. The code is set when the sensor value deviates too much from that set value, which means the signal is below the permitted limit. The sensor may have become slower with age.

    Possible causes

    • Ageing: the position sensor responds more slowly than before

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
    2. 2With a diagnostic tool, read the throttle position in live data while the pedal is pressed and released; the values should follow the pedal without delay
    3. 3Check the connectors at the throttle unit and the engine control module for contact resistance and oxidation
    4. 4Check whether the throttle is sticking or blocked by dirt, and clean the throttle unit when needed
    5. 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment decide whether the position sensor has become too slow, since ageing can cause this code
    6. 6If the fault remains after these checks, the throttle unit may need replacing

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • The car has poor performance and lacks power, especially when pulling away
    • The idle is uneven
    • The engine hesitates, surges or runs jerkily during acceleration, deceleration or at steady speed

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
