What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) works out the air mass the engine should receive and compares it with the reading from the mass air flow sensor. The code is set when the estimate comes out below the measured value. The fault may lie in a leak in the intake, a blocked or dirty intake system, or the MAF sensor.
Possible causes
- Air leakage in the intake system
- Contaminated throttle body
- Blocked intake system
- Damaged mass air flow (MAF) sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Check the intake hoses for cracks and loose clamps, since an air leak can cause this code
- 3Check that the air filter and intake hoses are not blocked by objects or dirt
- 4Clean the throttle body when needed if it is contaminated
- 5With a diagnostic tool, read the air mass in live data at idle and check whether the value is steady
- 6Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the mass air flow sensor if the fault remains after these checks
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
- The idle is uneven
