What does this fault code mean?
The ECM supervises the throttle and how it works. The code is set when adaptation of the throttle has not been completed because certain external conditions were not met. The fault may lie in a sticking throttle, the connectors, the wiring to the throttle motor or the throttle unit itself.
Possible causes
- The throttle is sticking or blocked by an oil film or dust
- The connections between the ECM and the throttle unit show contact resistance or oxidation
- Open circuit, or short circuit to ground or supply voltage, in the wiring to the throttle unit's motor
- Wiring to the throttle motor is short-circuited to itself
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2With the ignition on, check that the throttle is not sticking or blocked by dirt or oil film
- 3Check the connectors between the engine control module and the throttle unit for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the throttle motor have no open circuit and are not shorted to ground, supply voltage or each other
- 5With a diagnostic tool, read the throttle position in live data while the pedal is pressed and released
- 6Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment carry out the throttle adaptation once the other checks are done
Symptoms you may notice2
- The car has poor performance and lacks power
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- Based on the fault type, the ECM may cut power to the throttle motor
- The throttle then tries to set itself to the spring-loaded return position
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
