What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) tries to adapt the electronic throttle unit but finds that the basic adaptation conditions are not met. The code is set when adaptation is needed but cannot be carried out. Any other stored fault codes should be fixed first, as they may be why the adaptation fails.
Possible causes
- Ignition on with the engine off is one of the basic requirements, and it has not been met
- The accelerator pedal is not fully released, which prevents adaptation
- The vehicle is not stationary, so a speed signal is present
- The throttle is sticking or blocked by an oil film or dust
- The connections between the ECM and the throttle unit show contact resistance or oxidation
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Fix any other fault codes in the engine control module first, since they may have stopped the adaptation
- 3Make sure the accelerator pedal is fully released and the car is stationary before the adaptation is done
- 4Check that the throttle is not sticking, and clean the throttle unit when needed
- 5With a diagnostic tool, read the throttle position in live data while the accelerator pedal is pressed and released
- 6Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment carry out the throttle adaptation once the other checks are done
Symptoms you may notice1
- The car has poor performance and lacks power
What the fault can affect3
- Adaptation is cancelled
- On cars with a new control module that has never adapted the throttle, the throttle motor supply is cut and the throttle springs back
- The engine control module then uses reversible fuel shut-off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
