What does this fault code mean?
This code concerns the throttle unit and its parts: the throttle, the throttle motor and the wiring to it. The ECM supervises the throttle and sets the code when adaptation has not been completed because certain external conditions were absent.
Possible causes
- The throttle is sticking or blocked by an oil film or dust
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections between the engine control module and the throttle unit
- Open circuit or short to ground or supply voltage in the wiring to the throttle motor
- Wiring to the throttle motor is short-circuited to itself
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Check that the throttle is not sticking or blocked, and clean the throttle unit when needed
- 3Check the connectors between the engine control module and the throttle unit for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the throttle motor wires have no open circuit and are not shorted to ground, supply voltage or each other
- 5With a diagnostic tool, read the throttle position in live data while the accelerator pedal is pressed and released
- 6Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment carry out the adaptation once the other checks are done
Symptoms you may notice1
- The car has poor performance and lacks power
What the fault can affect2
- Based on the fault type, the ECM may cut power to the throttle motor
- The throttle then tries to set itself to the spring-loaded return position
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
