What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) adjusts injection from the lambda sensor reading to keep the mixture at λ=1. The code is set when that adjustment has to be made close to its maximum in the lower or upper part-load range. The fault may lie in a leak after the turbo, the mass air flow sensor, the fuel pressure, the lambda sensor, the injectors or the fuel itself.
Possible causes
- Air leakage after the turbocharger, between the turbo and the throttle unit
- Damaged mass air flow (MAF) sensor
- Low fuel pressure
- Damaged heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
- Damaged or incorrect type of injectors
- Incorrectly calculated ethanol content
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Look for leaks between the mass air flow sensor and the turbocharger
- 3Have a workshop measure the fuel pressure and check that it is not too low
- 4Check the mass air flow sensor for damage and dirt, and check its connectors and wiring
- 5Think back on how the car has been refuelled; have a workshop check the ethanol calculation if needed
- 6Replace the lambda sensor if nothing above cures the fault, since a damaged lambda sensor can also set this code
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
