What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) adjusts injection from the lambda sensor reading to keep the mixture at λ=1. This code concerns the idle range and is set when the correction has to be made close to its maximum there, meaning the idle mixture runs too lean. The fault may lie in the mass air flow sensor, a leak in the intake, the injectors, the lambda sensor or the calculated ethanol content.
Possible causes
- Damaged mass air flow (MAF) sensor
- Air leakage in the intake system
- Damaged or incorrect type of injectors
- Damaged heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
- Incorrectly calculated ethanol content
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Check the intake system for air leaks, including past the EVAP valve and the brake booster
- 3Check that the mass air flow sensor is not damaged or dirty
- 4Think back on how the car has been refuelled; if the calculated ethanol content may be wrong, have a workshop check the ethanol calculation
- 5Have a workshop confirm that the injectors are intact and of the correct type
- 6Replace the lambda sensor if nothing above cures the fault, since a damaged lambda sensor can also set this code
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
