What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the lambda sensor signal and compares the front and rear sensor adaptation values. The code is set when the signal shows a mixture that is incorrectly rich compared with what the ECM expects, and the deviation is too large. The fault may lie in the exhaust system, the sensor connectors or the sensor itself.
Possible causes
- Leakage in the exhaust system
- Lambda sensor shows an incorrectly rich fuel/air mixture
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals
- Damaged heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Check the exhaust system for leaks
- 3Check the connectors at the lambda sensor and the engine control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Have a workshop check the engine control module, since the fault-tracing points to a possible internal fault there
- 5Replace the lambda sensor if the fault remains after these checks and no other cause is found
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- Lambda sensor control is switched off
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are switched off
