What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors combustion in each cylinder using the front and rear lambda sensors and engine speed. The code is set when one cylinder gets too much fuel or too little air compared with the others. The fault may lie in an injector, an ignition coil, a leak in the manifolds or the lambda sensors.
Possible causes
- Damaged or leaking fuel injector
- Damaged ignition coil or spark plug
- Air leak at the intake manifold
- Air leak at the exhaust manifold
- Damaged front heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
- Damaged rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes for the injectors, ignition coils and lambda sensors first and fix them, since this code can be a follow-on fault
- 2Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 3Have a workshop check the injector valves for leakage
- 4Check the intake and exhaust manifolds for air leaks, especially where a leak would affect only one cylinder
- 5Check the spark plugs and ignition coils for damage
- 6Replace the lambda sensor if the fault remains after these checks, since a defective front or rear sensor can rarely cause this code
Symptoms you may notice3
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
- The idle is uneven
- The car hesitates, surges or runs jerkily, both during acceleration and at steady speed
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
