What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the rear heated oxygen sensor by checking its signal. The code is set when the signal falls outside the range it should stay within, or when the heater voltage disturbs the sensor signal.
Possible causes
- Signal wire is shorted to the preheating circuit
- Earth wire is shorted to the preheating circuit
- Damaged rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
What you can do
- 1Read the code, note it and clear it. Then drive the car and read again to see whether it returns
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the rear heated oxygen sensor are not shorted to each other
- 3If the wiring is in order, try a new rear heated oxygen sensor. Have a workshop diagnose further if the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
What the fault can affect2
- Rear heated oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Catalytic converter diagnosis is switched off
