What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) monitors the heated oxygen sensor by checking its signal. The code is set when the sensor's heater circuit behaves abnormally. Although the code is named for a low signal, it concerns the heater circuit, and the fault may lie in the connections, the wires or the sensor.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance
    • Signal wire shorted to earth
    • Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
    • Open circuit in the signal wire
    • Damaged oxygen sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact
    2. 2Check the oxygen sensor connections for contact resistance, looseness and oxidation. Do not use rust-dissolving spray or grease in the connector
    3. 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not shorted to earth or supply voltage and has no break
    4. 4If the wiring is in order, try a new oxygen sensor
    5. 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment diagnose further

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • No noticeable symptoms for the driver

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
