What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) regulates boost pressure with a turbo control valve. The two turbochargers work together, and the code applies to both. The code is set when boost pressure is below the permitted limit while driving with varying throttle. The module can detect both small faults over a long time and larger faults more quickly.
Possible causes
- Damaged turbo control valve
- Air leak in the intake system
- Damaged turbocharger
- Damaged relief valve
- Hoses to the wastegate or bypass valve pressure servo are loose, blocked or damaged
- Sticking wastegate or bypass valve
What you can do
- 1Read the code, note it and clear it. Then drive the car with varying throttle and read again to see whether it returns
- 2Look for an air leak in the intake system, for example loose hose clamps and damaged hoses
- 3Check that the hoses to the wastegate valve pressure servo are secure and not blocked or damaged
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the boost pressure in live data while the throttle is varied and check that it follows the throttle
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the turbo control valve, the wastegate valve and the turbocharger
Symptoms you may notice3
- Check engine lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
- Poor performance and lack of power, especially when starting off
- The car hesitates, surges or runs roughly during acceleration, deceleration or steady speed, sometimes or all the time
