What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) continuously monitors the voltage from the rear heated oxygen sensor on bank 1, which is the cylinder row nearest the front with cylinders 1, 3, 5 and 7. The code is set when the voltage is not within the permitted range, and the signal has stuck in the lean position.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Signal wire shorted to earth
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
- The oxygen sensor is not positioned in the exhaust flow
What you can do
- 1Start the engine, let it idle for a while, and then read the status of the code
- 2Check that the oxygen sensor is fitted securely in the exhaust pipe so that it sits in the exhaust flow
- 3Check the connectors to the rear oxygen sensor for contact resistance and oxidation. Rust-dissolving spray and grease should not be used in the connector
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no break and is not shorted to earth
- 5If the wiring is in order, try a new rear oxygen sensor. Have a workshop diagnose further if the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
What the fault can affect2
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
- The engine control uses a calculated value instead
